Obituary

Janice Marie (DeSalvo) McMahan, devoted and beloved mother, grandmother, and cornerstone of her family, passed away on February 19, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was 71 years old.

Janice was born on August 12, 1954, to Phillip and Catherine DeSalvo in Little Rock, Arkansas. Her early years were spent in Belleville, Illinois, where she loved to swim, create art, and play the saxophone. She graduated from St. Teresa grade school. The family later moved to Springfield, IL, where she was active in a scouting group and student government. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy high school and attended Illinois State University.

Janice married George McMahan in 1973. They settled in Astoria, Oregon, where they raised six children.

Janice was a loving mother, homemaker, gardener, an active member of her church, and a volunteer at her children's schools. After her children left the nest, she worked at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hospice House and was a beloved caregiver. She also picked up her paintbrushes again, studying under local artist Wim Vlek. She spent many hours capturing the world around her on canvas, most notably painting serene nature scenes of Astoria and the Columbia River. Her creative spirit lives on through her grandchildren, who inherited her unique eye and passion for creating beauty through many different art mediums, keeping her spirit vibrant and present.

She is survived by her six children: Sarah (Eli) Coplen, Rachel (Robert) Stineman, Rebekah (Jason) Lilley, Roberta DeSalvo, Boaz (Kaia) McMahan, and Jesse (Olesya) McMahan, thirteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, with one on the way. Grandkids Taylor, Lauren, Felipe, Aubrey, Zadok, Shane, Georgia, Anmaree, Alana, Everlee, Nicolas, Arkady, and Lydia were the light of her life.

She is also survived by her two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol (Harry) Kingston and Melda (Will) DeSalvo, along with nieces and nephews Brian, Debra, Joe, Cathy and Paavo, who will miss their "Aunt Janaynay".

Janice was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Richard (Emily) DeSalvo.

Janice was a primary source of comfort and stability to her family. She will be remembered for her unrelenting strength and grace under pressure, as well as her unmatched wit and sense of humor.

A private graveside service is planned for February 27th, 2026. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to Clatsop Care Center or the Oregon Chapter of the MS Society.

A memorial showcasing her art and life will be planned at a later date.

Additionally, the family wishes to acknowledge and express gratitude to the wonderful caregivers and staff at Clatsop Care Center, who filled Janice's final days with exceptional warmth and care
