Harry Wallace Phillips, 84, of Astoria, died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, in Astoria.
He was born Nov. 11, 1925, in Astoria, to Harry P. and Pearl K. Mattson Phillips.
Raised in Astoria, he graduated from Astoria High School. He attended Oregon State University and Oregon Technical Institute.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for more than two years. After his service, he worked at a variety of jobs.
He married Martha Ann Funk in California. She preceded him in death in 1993.
Mr. Phillips was employed with Bancroft-Whitney Co. for more than 25 years in Southern California, selling law books and law reports. After his retirement, he moved back to Astoria in the late 1990s, and has resided here since.
Family members said his hobbies included fishing for salmon and sturgeon. He loved attending his great-nephews' sporting events.
He is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Ardelle Phillips of Astoria and Howard and Vieno Phillips of Plymouth, Minn.; a nephew, Paul Phillips and his wife, Louise, of Astoria; four nieces, Kimberly Lund and her husband, Dave, of Astoria, Anne Vilkama and her husband, Esa, of Plymouth, and Pearl Raisanen and her husband, Kenny, and Victoria Pikkarainen and her husband, David, all of Rockford, Minn.; 31 great-nieces and nephews; and seven great-great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 18 and 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 19 at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 19 at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary.
Private burial will take place at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Astoria High School Athletic Fund, in care of Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.
