Michael “Mike” Alan Johnson, age 63, of Hammond, Oregon, passed away at home on Aug. 15th, 2017. He was born in Astoria, Oregon, to Betty Ann Broman Cunningham and Donald E. Johnson, on Oct. 1, 1953. Mike was raised in the Lewis and Clark area, and graduated from Astoria High School in 1972. He was a logger and a machinist. He loved animals of all kinds and gardening. During his lifetime he took leadership of the Astoria Regatta parade, the Swedish tug-of-war team for the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival and coached recreational league basketball and softball. Mike had a very kind, gentle spirit. He would give his last dime or the shirt off his back to someone in need. He loved and adored his nieces and nephews, and was very much a part of their lives. He is survived by his two dogs, Summer and Tinker; his parents, Bill and Betty Cunningham; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy and Van Kennell, Dixie and Todd Dowaliby and Suzanne and John Wall; a brother, James Cunningham; an uncle, James “Uncle Jimmy” Carruthers; and an aunt, Lois Mills of Albany. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Laurie and Jon Major, Meg, Kim, Kara and Mara Dowaliby and Caleb and William Cunningham; as well as his great-nephews, Liam and Landon Major. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Donald “Ole” Johnson, and his beloved nephew, Daniel H. Kennell. A graveside service will be held at noon on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at Ocean View Cemetery.
