Doris June Huddleston, 85, of Svensen, passed away June 18, 2014. in Svensen. She was born June 6,1929, in Lansford, North Dakota, to Theodore and Alma Wiese Handeland. She grew up on the family farm and was the eighth of twelve children. She attended Lansford schools and graduated (in a class of nine) from Lansford High School in 1945.
Doris married Robert Huddleston June 30, 1948, in Lansford. He preceded her in death on November 8, 2001, after 53 years of marriage.
They lived in California for two years, and North Dakota for four years, before moving to Salem, Oregon in 1954. Doris worked in retail for several years, raised four children with Robert, and worked as a teacher in Salem for many years before retiring and moving to Svensen in 1990. She enjoyed many activities, including cooking, sewing, reading, being a den mother and bell choir member, traveling and camping. Doris was also very active with bird watching, gardening, flowers, pets and spending time with her family. She was a member of Holy Cross (formerly Grace) Lutheran Church in Salem and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Knappa. Doris is survived by three sons, Robert Huddleston of Salem, Richard Huddleston of Svensen and Scott Huddleston of Knappa; a daughter, Denise Alien of Svensen; three brothers, Theodore Handeland and Larry Handeland in North Dakota, and Donald Handeland in Wyoming; three sisters, Gladys Abemathey in North Dakota, Erma Vlach in Kentucky and Marian Rice in Colorado; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. A private graveside service will be held at Prairie Cemetery in Knappa.
