Emmeline Marie Gerttula

Emmeline Marie Gerttula, age 82, of Astoria, died Thursday, July 5, 2012, in Astoria, of cancer. She was born Nov. 20, 1929, in Winokur, Ga., to Walter Vance and Marie (Walker) Barbour. During her preschool years, she and her father traveled constantly, going through 40 of the then 48 states. She attended school in Astoria and Knappa, graduating in 1947. On Nov. 24, 1948, she married V. Gordon Gerttula. He preceded her in death in 2007. Mrs. Gerttula and her husband moved to Corvallis, then to Oakland, Calif., Portland, Vancouver, Wash., St. Francisville, La., Knappa, Camas, Wash., Port Angeles, Wash., Bogalusa, La., Port Townsend, Wash., San Francisco, Vancouver, Long Beach, Wash., and finally, Seaside. After her husband’s death, she moved to Astoria. Family members said her passion was painting. She took many classes and was a member of the Trails End Art Association in Gearhart. She is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Steve and Suzanne Gerttula, Ric and Paula Gerttula and Gary and Scott Gerttula; and three grandchildren, Alison and Tyler Gerttula and Blake Gerttula and his wife, Tiffany. She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Karen Gerttula. A private family graveside service was held July 8, at Greenwood Cemetery in Astoria.
